My Shanty On the Hill

©2013. Recorded for the Mackinaw, Illinois Historical Collection

Time to feed the chickens and chase the coon out of the house

sweep the floor and lean the boards on the wall that faces south

mark the eggs and put em in the basket on the sill

there's so much to do in my shanty on the hill

Tote a sack of walnuts to the produce man downtown

buy a pair of overhauls and then it's homeward bound

dry a bunch of bittersweet, some mustard seeds and dill

there's so much to do in my shanty on the hill

Oh a lawyer looks so dandy in his fancy suit and coat

a farmer's always busy raising dairy cows and goats

a carpenter builds furniture just to pay his bills

and I've got so much to do in my shanty on the hill

Fix the broken chair out back before the boys drop by

sort the magazines by name and wipe the dishes dry

start the fire and fetch some water just like Jack and Jill

there's so much to do in my shanty on the hill

Tonight I'll take a walk to watch the stars up in the sky

see the full moon rise and hear the river's lullaby

God in all Your glory grant me strength to serve your will

there's so much to do in my shanty on the hill

Time to feed the chickens and chase the coon out of the house

sweep the floor and lean the board on the wall that faces south

mark the eggs and put em in the basket on the sill

there's so much to do in my shanty on the hill

there's so much to do in my shanty on the hill
