Third Unitarian Church presents folk singer songwriter Dvorak in a Labor Day tribute September 6

CHICAGO IL - Folk singer-songwriter Mark Dvorak and The Power of Song Singers will celebrate Labor Day with a live and live stream concert on Sunday, September 6 at 11:30 am CDT at the Third Unitarian Church, 301 N. Mayfield Avenue. The ensemble will be accompanied by Third Unitarian Music Director Kyle Stephens on piano.

“I attended a discussion panel at the Old Town School of Folk Music in the early 1980s,” said Dvorak. “Pete Seeger and writer Bob Reiser were traveling across the country to workshop a book idea that would be, “Carry It On: A History in Song and Picture of the Working Men & Women of America” (published 1986).

“The workshop was illuminating,” said Dvorak. “Pete sang a few songs, but was more interested in learning what others would like to see in a compendium volume of Labor songs and lore. I loved the workshop and loved learning the songs in the book.”

Dvorak went on to develop the music program, “Carry It On,” based upon the material contained in the Seeger / Reiser collection.

“We’ll be presenting selections from the book, and have updated and rewritten some of the songs,” said Dvorak. “The Third Unitarian Church of Chicago is a progressive and open-hearted community. We hope these songs might lift the congregation and strengthen the common resolve within us that peace, justice and equity will one day prevail."

The Chicago Tribune has called Dvorak “masterful,” and the Fox Valley Folk Festival describes him as “a living archive of song and style.” Dvorak has won awards for journalism and children’s music, and was honored in 2013 with the FARM Lantern Bearer Award from Folk Alliance International. In 2008 he received the Woodstock Folk Festival Lifetime Achievement Award and in 2012 Rich Warren, long time host of The Midnight Special radio program named Dvorak “Chicago’s official troubadour.”

The event is free to the public. A free will donation will be accepted. Phone 773.626.9385 for information or log onto www.thirdunitarianchurch.org
