Leading & following at the folk jam

DOWNERS GROVE IL - The Plank Road Folk Music Society and the Two Way Street Coffee House present a hands on workshop with folk singer and Old Town School of Folk Music faculty member Mark Dvorak, “Leading and Following At the Folk Jam.” The session takes place on Saturday, June 8, from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm in the Parlor at the First Congregational Church of Downers Grove, 1047 Curtiss, Downers Grove, IL. An all-acoustic jam session and sing along will follow the workshop, beginning at 3:30 pm.

"Mark is the jammaster here at the Old Town School," said program manager Jimmy Tomasello. "Nobody in the Midwest, possibly the nation, has led more jam sessions and sing alongs than Mark. He started the Old Town School Song Circle back in the 1980s and has continued right through, to his legendary Folk Club sessions and our own Thursday Folk Jams here at the school. He has a magical way of involving people in the music and getting us to play and sing together."

In the workshop, Dvorak will identify the responsibilities that come with leading a song, and offer tips on choosing the kinds of songs on which others can easily join in. Dvorak will also demonstrate "the democracy of chaos," and the benefits of working without printed materials. Musicians who are new to jamming with others will learn how to watch and listen for chord changes, and strategies on how to vary the program and further involve players and singers will also be demonstrated.

"Even beginners, who only know a few chords benefit from participating in a community jam," said Dvorak. "More advance players will gain the opportunity to get behind others by adding runs, fills, harmonies and even leads. We make music together to enrich ourselves and to remain active in our own creative lives."

Admission to the workshop is $30, $20 for Plank Road Folk Music Society members. Those wishing to attend should bring their acoustic instruments.
